Natural Curly Hair Journey: Beginner’s Guide and Kit

Ok… so those that are newly natural, transitioning or thinking of going natural I’m sure you’re already feeling stressed and clueless and asking yourself where do you even  start  right? Trust me I know the feeling all too well because I was in your shoes not too long ago and  with 100′s of products out there it can get a little overwhelming and discouraging so I thought I’d put together helpful tips and informations and let you know what I think every natural curly girl should have. Consider this a CURLFIDANT Natural beginners kit!

I will list the basic things you need and then give examples of products I’ve used/use and love or have heard great reviews about…however whatever I recommend isn’t the end it’s  just a guideline to help you get started and make your journey easier to start. Now you’re taking the step to take care of your hair, you’re now entering the trial & error product stage, so don’t be discouraged if someone has recommended something and it doesn’t work as well for you, at times it takes a while to really figure out what your hair likes.

Step 1- First figure out what you want to incorporate into your hair regimen.

Here is an example of the basics to any regimen: Cleanse, Moisturize, Strengthen and Protect.  This may be where your regimen starts and ends, but depending on your lifestyle and your hair’s needs, there may be other elements that you decide to add to it (for example hot oil treatments, pre-shampoo, rinses, deep conditioners/daily moisturizers/sealants, co-washing, etc.).

Step 2- Finding Products for your Hair Regimen which I listed a few that I’ve used/use and like that’s why I’m recommending them and also some that I heard are great based on reviews.

This is where a lot of people get hung up for various reasons, the ailment often referred to as being a PJ (Product Junkie).

How to prevent this: Simply Weed out bad products (or to find some products to start out with) you do this by reading blogs like this, check out product reviews, forums and websites.

From there try one product at a time (for a few weeks at a time), if you hate it repeatedly kick it to the curb; but if you love it keep it by your side.

Step 3- Buy your products and tools you will use regularly.

This is the second most important part aside from starting your natural hair journey, because you don’t have what you need you will not get the results you long for.

Step 4- Be Consistent, Persistent and Patient!

While you are working on your regimen you may have some setbacks and/or epiphanies, at which point you reassess and adjust your regimen to accommodate them.  But the foundation of your regimen doesn’t change much and what’s important is being consistent and persistent in your healthy hair endeavors.  It is the best/fastest way to get to your goals. However, keep in mind that this journey takes time. You should also keep in mind that you don’t need to spend lots of money on products many naturals use can be found in your kitchen cabinets or in your local drugstores, grocery stores, or health food stores. I posted some DIY hair treatments that are amazing and works for me.   Anyway, I wanted to share the basic tools I’ve used through out my journey so far and maybe it can help someone looking to start their own regimen.

You’ll learn that your hair will tell you what it needs and it’s critical that you pay attention to what it is telling you. Selecting your initial set of natural hair products is important and many naturals spend quite a bit of time trying new products in an attempt to find the perfect products (i.e., holy grail products) for their hair. You must get to know your hair to understand which products will work best for you.

Ok so take out your paper pad and pen and have fun making your list! 

1. Sulfate free shampoo- Sulfate free shampoos cleanses your hair without all the harsh cleansers that are found in your regular shampoos, which strips your hair of everything even it’s natural oils causing your hair to feel dry and sometimes become matted.

*Some people swear by sulphate free shampoos but if you use a lot of products with silicone  ’cones’ in them you’ll need a sulphate shampoo to remove them

2. Conditioners-Conditioners have so many purposes in a natural’s regimen they can be used for deep conditioning, rinse out conditioning treatments after washes, co-washes, leave-ins and some can even be used a stylers. (Make sure to read the labels or instructions to determine whether a conditioner should be used as a leave-in, rinse out, or deep conditioner but all three should have a place in your regimen)

3. Oils- Oils are a MUST in every natural’s regimen. Oils help to seal in the moisture in your strands after applying water or a water based product to your strands. Oils are another mutli-purpose product, you can use your oils as a hot oil treatment,  a pre-poo treatment, to baggy your ends, oil rinses, sealing your ends, to help reduce frizz when unraveling twists or braids, adding to your conditioners for an extra lil kick or to add slip to a conditioner for detangling.

4. Styling aids- Styling aids come in many different variations; creams, butters, pomades, gels, gel-creams, and many others and help hold your twist, braids, curls, and coils in place to create your styles.

5. Heat cap- the heat cap is going to be used every week when you apply your deep conditioner on your hair.

*You can purchase a heating cap at a Sally’s beauty supply store or Amazon

6. Applicator bottles (optional)- Applicator bottles are great to have on hand to store your oils in. Because the bottle top has an applicator tip it’s easier to apply oil to your scalp and hair without having to pour it in your hands and have  it running all down your arm and dripping on the floor it’s just too messy for me.

7. Flexi rods or perm rods- Curling rods are great to have on hand to do curly styles, braid/twist ~n~ curl outs, adding curls to the ends of twists and braids, and they’re a transitioner’s bestfriend because they create a curl that helps blend the two different hair textures together (the new growth and relaxed ends which is a BIG DEAL!

8. Hair pins, clips, headbands, and other accessories (optional)- Hair pins, bobby pins, headbands and other accessories are essential in a regimen. These simple accessories could be just what you need to change or spice up a hairstyle. Butterfly clips  also help you to keep your hair in place and sectioned off as you apply product or style your  hair. Trust me you can’t ever have too many hair accessories lol.

EXAMPLES ON MYSELF WEARING HEADBANDS

9. Spray bottle filled with water- Another must have for any natural, water is the best moisturizer for natural hair. You can use your spray bottle to re-wet your hair if it starts to dry while you’re styling or detangling. Must get two sizes one for home and a travel size one for tor purse.

10. Diffuser- diffuser is a must for your blower when you wash your hair and have to be out the house quick and you need to dry your hair fast. It also creats more volume to your curls.

11.  Wide comb for detangling, and sectioning your hair.

12. Last but definitely not least is silk or satin scarf, bonnet and a pillowcase You will need these to protect your hair from those cotton sheets, pillows and pillowcases and blankets from sucking the moisture out your hair and skin while you’re Sleeping .You should buy at least two bonnets, pillowcases,  to rotate between, the oils still soak through the fabrics so you’ll need to wash them often to prevent your face from breaking out.

THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT THAT WITHOUT ALL I MENTIONED WILL FAIL IS H20 (WATER) drink at least a gallon a day to keep your hair moisturized. And that’s your beginners guide and kit to CURLFIDANT CURLS! Best of luck! Please feel free to leave comments or questions;)

BASIC FIY HAIR FACTS

Some experts estimate that shedding more than 100 hairs per day is perfectly normal. About 10% of the hairs on your head are in a resting phase (telogen) and those hairs shed (exogen) after a period if time (generally 2 or 3 months). The other 90% (roughly) of your hairs are growing at any given time.

Hair growth occurs in cycles consisting of four phases: Anagen (growth phase), Catagen (transitional phase), Telogen (resting phase) and Exogen (shedding phase). Hair grows at different rates for different people; the average rate is around one-half inch per month.

My advice to you: Don’t worry too much about your hair shedding unless it seems truly excessive. If your hair shedding does seem excessive, you should start by investigating the following areas: tight hairstyles, diet and nutrition, current medications, stress, illnesses, nervous habits, Alopecia Areata and hormonal changes. Several of these issues may require the professional diagnoses of a medical doctor to determine the root cause of the hair shedding.

Prevent Breakage and Split-ends

Your hair is dead material, which is the reason why you can treat it with strong chemicals, cut it with scissors or apply heat to it without feeling a thing. The only problem with that is – since your hair is not alive, it cannot repair itself. Damage to the hair must be trimmed away or grown out. For example, there is not a permanent cure for split-ends. There are some conditioners that can essentially patch split-ends and make them less visible, but over a period of time those split-ends will reappear. The only way to permanently get rid of your split-ends is to trim them away. You should absolutely never burn away your split-ends.

Hair breakage is the most common cause of hair loss. Tight hairstyles (ex. tight ponytails and braids) can break off the hair and damage the hair follicle. If your hair constantly breaks you will need to identify exactly what’s causing the breakage and eliminate the culprit to prevent further breakage. The most common causes of breakage are heat, harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles and rough treatment.
